January Sun | Days I Wandered Places I've Already Been


Monday or Tuesday night, the pub closes at the same time. Guests don’t usually linger around for too long on weekdays, especially during this time of year when their pockets cannot afford to stay loose. There aren’t any special performances, just vinyl jazz all evening.


She took the same route, with the same streetlamps smiling, and found herself right where a boy had told her he loved her ponytail. It was in the next alley where her parents met, and that road led to the music shop they used to wander together after school. Her feet then entered the furthest corner of town and were greeted by a rusty bell. Growing up, Thursdays were treated to a jasmine milk tea, sipped by a view from the third floor balcony, because they were her longest days.


Today was a Tuesday and she was a little less tired, at least physically. It was a low lit speakeasy under her favourite sweets store. No milk tea; a berry vodka soon found her table.


And still, out there, the world out was continuing apace, as was she.

Only when we wander places we’ve already been, do we realize how much we’ve changed.
